Shared ownership

How communities and local authorities can take an ownership stake in a clean energy project and share in the benefits.

Shared ownership lets a community or council take a stake in a larger commercial project in their area. In return, it shares in the revenue the project earns and the benefits it brings, so more of the value stays local.

This guidance is for communities, councils and developers exploring shared ownership of clean energy projects. The guidance and template documents are available for projects across the UK.

Joint venture

The community and the developer set up a shared company to own the project together.

Shared revenue

The community receives an agreed share of the revenue the project earns.

Split site

Ownership of the project is split, so the community owns and runs a defined physical part of it (e.g. a set array of solar panels or wind turbines).
