Why GBE Local exists

Local and community energy projects provide a range of benefits to their local areas and people, from bill savings, community benefit funds, and the wider social benefits of retaining wealth from projects, locally. However, they can be hard to get off the ground. They often struggle to raise finance, meet the upfront costs of early development, or find the specialist expertise they need.

GBE Local helps remove these barriers through funding, advice, partnerships and shared ownership, so more communities and public services can own and benefit from clean energy.

Support across the UK

Great British Energy is investing in community energy support across all four UK nations.

We provide grant funding in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, we are investing in programmes delivered through CARES. We are also supporting project development through Local Net Zero Hubs, Advice NI and the Welsh Government Energy Service.

More to come

This is just the first phase of GBE Local. Additional funding, finance and support products are currently under development.

How we work

Scale and pace

We back models that can be repeated across the country, so each project makes the next faster to deliver.

Fairness

We design funding and support so communities with less time, money or expertise can take part.

Innovation

We reduce risk and scale new, high-impact models.

Ownership

We prioritise community and public ownership in every investment, so value stays local.

Local Power Plan

The Local Power Plan explains our vision for helping communities and public services own and benefit from clean energy projects across the UK.
