Local Power Plan

Our vision is that by 2030, every community in the UK will have the opportunity to benefit from, and own, a local energy project.

The Local Power Plan sets out a clear vision and plan to revolutionise the UK’s local and community energy sector. Growing the sector will give communities and organisations across the UK a direct stake in a clean, green, more affordable energy future.

Get in touch

We’d like to hear from you if you:

  • are a community energy organisation

  • are a local authority or part of the public sector

  • are currently developing a community or local energy project

Whatever stage you’re at in your engagement with a community or local renewable energy project, we’d welcome your input.

We want to understand how many projects need project delivery investment and how many want early-stage support. This will help us design and develop our services and products.

The information you provide will help us:

  • build a clearer picture of the projects and proposals that exist across the country

  • inform the design of future GBE products and approaches

  • support coordinated engagement with the local and community energy sector

Completing the Expression of Interest (EOI) is entirely optional and is not required in order to contact GBE directly for informal discussions, or engage via local authorities, combined authorities, or other partners.

This EOI is simply GBE’s first step toward coordinated engagement on local and community power, to build a shared understanding of what projects are emerging across the country.

Submit your interest

Whether you’re at an early or more advanced stage of your project development or just starting to get interested in a local or community energy project, you may wish to use this Expression of Interest form to request subscription to our mailing list. We’ll use this to share news about our future initiatives as they are announced.

How we'll support community energy

Increasing community benefits, community ownership and community cohesion are central to our vision. Great British Energy (GBE) is a partner with Government for the delivery of the Local Power Plan and GBE, along with its trusted partners, will:

  • Power communities: support over 1,000 local and community energy projects, boosting shared ownership
  • Catalyse the development of scalable, self-sustaining business models for community energy organisations
  • Act as a sector leader, market maker, and strategic investor, drive innovation to deliver benefits to communities
  • Help more communities access the benefits of local and community energy, by developing tools to help new communities get involved with community energy

How we will work with strategic authorities

We cannot achieve this alone, want to work in partnership to develop community and local energy projects. We have already started developing our partnership approach and are working with Mayoral Strategic Authorities and non-Mayoral Combined Authorities to form long term partnerships that:

  • speed up the deployment of clean power across local areas
  • grow local and community energy programmes
  • connect national capability with local expertise to unlock investable projects

We have already formalised 10 agreements with:

  • Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority
  • Devon & Torbay Combined County Authority
  • East Midlands Combined County Authority
  • Greater London Authority
  • Greater Manchester Combined Authority
  • North East Mayoral Combined Authority
  • West Midlands Combined Authority
  • The West of England Combined Authority
  • West Yorkshire Combined Authority
  • York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority

We are in advanced discussions with others.
